In what is one of the most intriguing first-round matchups, 2nd seed Memphis Grizzlies failed to make the most of the homecourt in game 1 as they lost by 16 points to the 7th sees Lakers. What was a see-saw battle all the way to the 4th quarter quickly swung in the Lakers’ favor when Memphis star guard Ja Morant went down with what looked like an injury to his wrist after trying to brace a fall. The Lakers went on a 15-0 run late in the game to put in beyond reach and effectively steal homecourt from the Grizzlies.
The Lakers were not fazed by their much-fancied opponents and they took it to them right from the start, taking a 5-point lead at the end of the opening quarter. The key to their success was however the multiple contributions from little-known players like Austin Reeves and Rui Hachimura as well as D’Angelo Russell who they acquired at the deadline. This took pressure from their stars Lebron James and Anthony Davis.
The Lakers’ defence also came to the fore led by Davis who had 12 rebounds and blocked 7 shots. We expect him to continue anchoring the defence and we fancy him to pick up double-digit rebounds yet again in this game.
