World number 1 Carlos Alcaraz has basically cruised through Roland Garros. En route to this eagerly anticipated semis, he has dropped just one set, and even so, he still easily won that match. Against 5th seed Tsitsipas in the quarters he showed his ability to raise his game even higher, dominating rallies and never really looked in trouble as he picked up the 3-0 win. He understands the magnitude of this upcoming match against one of the best players the game has ever seen. A match could possibly signify the passing of the torch should he end up winning.
Former number 1 Novak Djokovic did have some struggles earlier in the season. But he has been equally as impressive as Alacarz in this tournament. At 36, many would be tempted to write him off but his determination and championship heart and pedigree have been there for all to see. He was particularly impressive in the final three sets of his quarterfinal versus Karen Khachanov, showing great composure in tie-breakers as he rallied back to win three straight sets after dropping the first one. His body may not be in the best shape of his life, but his spirit and determination cannot be questioned coming into this juicy matchup with the new kid on the block.
This certainly feels like a battle between two overlapping eras. While Alaraz looks to bring his youthful vibrance, and athleticism as well as his incredible shot-making panache, Djokovic will bring his tried and tested, fortress-like mix of offense and defense. We expect a particularly closely-fought opening set and we are backing at least 10 games to be played.
This will hopefully be a clash we’ll remember far into the future.
