Australian Alexei Popyrin has struggled to start this season and has played just a handful of matches. This Monte Carlo Masters is just his fifth tournament since the start of the year as he tries to ramp up his fitness levels and boost his rankings. He comes in as the 46th seed and struggled in his opener against French qualifier Corentin Moutet, dropping the first set 6-3 before composing himself to win 2-1 (3-6, 7-5, 6-2) to advance to the second round at Monte-Carlo Country Club on Monday.
Andrey Rublev will kick off the defence of his Monte Carlo title here. He was in imperious form on his way to beating Holger Rune in the final last year. He looked a bit rusty in Miami last month losing early in an upset to Czech player Tomas Machac in straight sets. Clay is his favorite surface though as he showed in when he triumphed in Hong Kong in January. He will look to get off to a strong start here.
Seeing how Popyrin struggled in the opener and this season in general, it is difficult to see him getting anything from this game. We fancy the defending champion Rublev to come out of the blocks firing and we are picking him to prevail in straight sets here.
