Italian Lorenzo Sonego fought back from a set down to defeat Briton Daniel Evans in the first round to set up this early meeting with Alcaraz at the Rod Laver Arena on Thursday. He has his work cut out but he will be feeling confident having actually gotten the better of his more illustrious opponent in their only meeting back in 2021. Sonego was lethal in his serve in that last match winning 82% on his serve while dropping an expressive 23 aces. He will be hoping to carry some of that performance here.
Number 2 seed Carlos Alcaraz is eager to get back into the big stage in the first grand slam of the year after he lost the last one (US Open final) to his archrival Djokovic. He got off to a flawless start in the opening round of this competition with an easy 3-0 win over Frenchman Richard Gasquet. Alcaraz broke Gasquet’s serve 4 times in this match without conceding any break himself on his way to this victory.
